“The challenge I set myself was to capture The Northman’s fury and violence with the mythical and surreal – in one image that feels like a twisted fever dream from another age.Amleth is a “beast cloaked in man-flesh”, caught in a violent lifecycle and driven by rage to avenge his father’s death by killing his own kin. The poster depicts this brutal destiny in a surreal and nightmarish image, tying in many of the central themes of the film and Norse mythology: Amleth merging with a wolf, at the threshold between life and death, the Tree of Life twisting through his core. His axe merges with the moon and further blurs the line between the physical and the mythical, the earthly and the cosmic.Illustrated on tablet in Procreate with finishing touches done in Photoshop. “I love Norse mythology and viking history, so I tried to include as many accurate details as possible, from the seax and hand axe, to the spearhead and arrow head shapes and round shields with bosses. I researched common artifacts found in viking hoards, and used historically accurate helm shapes. In addition, the Old Futhark text on the chair is the first few lines of the Havamal, which warns against visiting stranger’s halls. Pertinent, right? This is my classic art style – a mox of old school RPG art and metal band tees. I hope you like!” – Jessica Grant
